WHY
“MILLSTONE
PAINTING”?

Throughout the 1700s, Wilton produced millstones used to grind crops like rye and corn in community gristmills in the area. The stone came from the abundant supply of gneiss and granite at what is now Quarry Head State Park.

According to Wilton historian and author of “Wilton, Connecticut: Three Centuries of People, Places, and Progress”, a millstone, cracked and partially buried, lay alongside what is now Ridgefield Road and locals began calling the route at its intersection, “the road by the millstone” - eventually shortened to Millstone Road, one of the most scenic and iconic roads in Wilton.

Stone from this same area was used in constructing foundations and structural components of many local homes and businesses, and sought for projects as far as the Singer Sewing Machine Factory in Elizabeth, NJ and the Brooklyn Bridge.

The name Millstone Painting reflects both our rootedness in the local community and our commitment to sustaining the history and vibrancy of this area for decades to come.
